The attractive river Saone is navigable for 407 kms and is one of the most important rivers for commercial transport in Europe. It is fed by waters from Burgundy, the Vosges and the Jura moutains and joins the Rhone at Lyon to drain into the Mediterranean sea.
Up to 6000 vessels of many different types navigate each year on this peaceful
river, including pleasure craft from all over Europe; French, Dutch, Belgian,
German barges and occasional sea going freighters of several thousand tons,
contrasting with the sailing boats, scullers and coxed eights from the local
clubs. Charolais cattle graze in the sourronding pastureland and kingfishers,
herons, cormorants, grebes and woodpeckers can be seen along the banks.
The "Fete de la Saone"
In 2006, we were happy to welcome about 4000 passengers during the two weekends of the "Fete de la Saone". They were able to learn more about the history of Chalon sur Saone and its river during a 45mins commented cruise.
The mairie of Chalon sur Saone also organised some cruises with tastings of wines from the nearby vineyards of the Cote Chalonnaise and with a local singer, Rosine Montel, who sings and composes traditional bargees songs.
